New exhibit: Bill Viola: Walking on the Edge Sept 22, 2016 - Jan 8, 2017 Presented as part of the multi-venue Performing the Landscape exhibition, curated by Lorenzo Fusi Bill Viola (b.1951) is internationally recognized as one of today’s leading artists. He has been instrumental in the establishment of video as a vital form of contemporary art, and in so doing has helped to greatly expand its scope in terms of technology, content, and historical reach. Viola’s immersive installations, video projections and sound environments focus on fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and aspects of consciousness. Walking on the Edge represents the inevitable separation of father and son as they take separate paths in their life’s journey.

Performing the Landscape Landscape is one of the most evocative tropes in Canadian visual culture, a popular genre and a cliché that often insist on conventional and stereotypical representations of the country. It is nevertheless a most powerful subject matter still very much appreciated by practitioners and audiences alike. Generations of artists have attempted to capture and depict the sensation of being overpowered by the majesty or beauty of the natural environment time and time again.
